Book Reflection: You and We by Jim Ferrell

Jim Ferrell's earlier books, Leadership and Self-Deception and The Anatomy of Peace, shaped how I try to see people as human beings rather than objects. Those ideas helped me as a leader, a parent, and as someone who wanted a shared language for working through bias and self-justification. So when Jim invited me to give feedback on his new book, You and We, I felt honored. His openness to integrating that feedback was itself a living example of what the book is about.

I will be honest. At first, I resisted. I struggled with the thought that the earlier books I valued so deeply might be incomplete. What I came to appreciate is that Jim is showing the courage to expand his own understanding and invite us along. You and We reframes leadership around relation, not the individual. The most important part of the org chart is not the boxes or the lines, but the space between them.

Two ideas struck me most. The first is the power of relational maps and frameworks that make the invisible visible, letting us see the quality of what happens between us. It reminded me of Organizational Network Analysis and of the Network First Manifesto, co-founded by Francisco Marin. The second is the reminder that 'Differences coming together are what make the new possible. We progress by uniting.' And, perhaps most personally, 'How we interact is who we are.'

What makes the book empowering is that it gives us tools to examine our own relations and take practical steps to engage, seek to understand, and stay open to change. This will be a lifelong journey for me, learning to bring these practices into my family life, my work, and my leadership.

The challenge Jim leaves us with is simple and profound: will we break and block, or will we bond and bridge?

The real question is not 'Who am I?' or 'Who are you?' but 'Who are we, together?'
