Quiet Ego and the Skill of Detached Awareness

In my last post, I shared how a quiet ego helps people navigate change with more steadiness. Here I want to focus on one skill that makes it possible: detached awareness.

Detached awareness means noticing what is happening without slipping into judgment or panic. It gives you enough space to see the situation clearly. Research on mindful attention, including work by Brown and Ryan in 2003, shows that this kind of present awareness lowers emotional reactivity and supports better decisions.

I saw this firsthand while helping a leader work through decisions during a layoff. They planned to let an employee go, even though that person had never been given clear expectations or support from a previous manager. While discussing the situation with the current manager, I felt my throat tighten and noticed my body becoming more animated. That awareness helped me pause. I took a few slow breaths and centered myself before bringing my assessment to the CEO. The conversation that followed was clearer, calmer, and more productive, because I noticed the tension instead of letting it drive the moment.

Detached awareness is often the first step toward a quieter ego. It interrupts the automatic reactions that come from fear, pressure, or urgency. That matters during layoffs, reorganizations, and any moment when people feel threatened or overwhelmed.

A simple practice

When a stressful moment triggers tension or urgency, pause for sixty seconds and breathe. Ask yourself: What is my body telling me right now, and what part of this reaction is about my fear rather than the situation itself? That short pause helps you move from automatic reaction to clearer judgment.

What physical cue tells you that stress is starting to take over?
